I created 101 YOU DO YOU Academy for women like us—women who give so much to everyone else that they forget to care for themselves. I know what it’s like to juggle life and responsibilities, always pushing your needs to the bottom of the list.

The Rollercoaster Ride:

My Journey to "Doing Me"

 

For as long as I can remember, I’ve struggled with my weight. It felt like a never-ending cycle—lose 5 kg, gain back 10 or more. I tried everything. But the problem was always the same: I never put myself first. Emotional eating, skipping meals, and bingeing at night—especially on donuts (my weakness!)—became my coping mechanisms.

Sure, I looked after myself in small ways—like the occasional pedicure with my mum and daughter—but I wasn’t meeting my deeper needs. I wasn’t asking myself what I really wanted or needed because I didn’t have time for that!  I just did what had to get done with every situation and rollin' without ever turning up the volume on who I really was.

2015, everything changed. I met a friend through a friend who had a similar pattern to me which inspired me to focus on my health well what I really mean is try again at the losee weight thing! We started walking together, working out in the garage, and talking about all things life. For the first time, I felt like I was moving forward—not for anyone else, but for me.

Around the same time, my marriage came to an end. It was one of the hardest things I’ve ever experienced, but it also gave me the space to focus on myself. I kept going, even when it was tough. Over the next 18 months, I lost 40 kg and felt more like myself than I ever had.

Of course, the challenge didn’t end there. Maintaining my progress meant staying self-aware and catching myself before slipping back into old habits. I’ve had ups and downs, gained some weight back, and had to course-correct. But the difference now is that I know how to reset quickly and protect my mental energy.

 


The Big Leap

Randomly for curiosity and a challenge, I pursued a Cert 4 in Weight Loss Management.  This was a challenge as I have not had to do assessments and tests for a long long time! The course confirmed that I was on the right track all along while also reinforcing three essential lessons:

  1. Consistency matters.
  2. Self-advocacy is key.
  3. Community is a must.

Funny enough, naturally, I’d spent years encouraging others to prioritise their needs while failing to do the same for myself. Now, I know better. About 80% of the time, I live by me-first principles—and when life happens, I reset quickly before things spiral out of control.

 


Life by Design, Not Default

Even though I’ve had a good life—one filled with gratitude and no regrets—there were still times when I felt like I was just existing. Like I was living on autopilot, following the motions like ground hog day!

If any of this resonates with you, I want you to know: It’s not too late to turn things around. Life is a rollercoaster, but the beauty lies in embracing the ride. Now is the time to put yourself first and design the life you want and deserve.
